The Private Lodge of the Worshipful Company of Butchers
Taurus Lodge was founded in 1919 and apart from the recent refurbishment period, it has always held its meetings at Butchers’ Hall.
Taurus meets on the 4th Monday of September (Installation), November, January (Burns Supper) and March. Meetings start around 4.00pm and finish around 9.15pm – enabling journeys home at a reasonable time.
Installation is when the new Worshipful Master is Installed. We welcome the Master of the Butchers’ Company to our November meeting when we present him with a donation to the charity of his choice.
Taurus members have the common bond that they are drawn from Liverymen of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. Some may already be Freemasons elsewhere or have become Freemasons by joining Taurus following their admission as Liverymen.
Freemasonry is over 300 years old and has much in common with Livery. Its basic tenets are like-minded men who are principled and support charitable work. It is secular and not a religion - enabling men of any faith to come together to enjoy friendship in a social atmosphere. The demonstration of principles is enacted through historical masonic rituals which every applicant undertakes. An absolute principle is that there is nothing which contradicts the responsibility of the individual with compliance to civil or moral laws and obligations.
In recent years, London lodges and Freemasons including Taurus and its members, have raised millions of pounds for public benefit. Currently we are funding two (of four) high rise aerial platforms being purchased at a cost of £2.5m by the London Fire Brigade following Grenfell. Previously we have donated a £3.5m cyberknife for Barts Hospital for advanced cancer treatment. In 2018 over £160,000 was donated to non-masonic charities for the good of the community at large. Similar amounts are donated each year.
