Ladies Spring in to Lunch

Published on: 15 May 2022

Liveryman Susan Hoefling recalls when a perfect Spring day marked the occasion of the Annual Ladies' Court lunch at Butchers' Hall on Friday 6 May.

The Lady Mayoress and Mrs Felicity Lyons, with the Master

The Company was honoured to welcome the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Amanda Keaveny, who was accompanied by Mrs Felicity Lyons, Consort to Alderman and Sheriff Nicholas Lyons.

Other guests included Mrs Nichola Davies, the Master of the Armourers’ Company and Mr Anthony Bickmore, the Master of the Wax Chandlers’ Company, both of whom were accompanied by their Clerks.

Finally, the Company was delighted to welcome Companion Member Mrs Derby Franks, widow of Past Master David Franks, accompanied by her son Liveryman Nick Franks and his wife Sharmila.

Lunch featured Welsh racks of lamb, generously donated by Liveryman Jim Gaffney, and much enjoyed by all. In keeping with tradition, the Master was pleased to take wine with two new Liverymen, clothed at a Court meeting that morning – Nicholas Finbow and Neil Maggs.

A particularly poignant moment was the presentation of a cheque for £5,000 by The Master to Gillian Nove, Director of Income Generation at Claire House Children’s hospice. Claire House was selected as the hospice supported by WCB in 2022 and the presentation was in memory of Lilian, daughter of Liveryman Andrew Cracknell and his wife Louise who were also present at the lunch.

There was much excitement after lunch with the conclusion of a 100-mile run outside Butchers’ Hall. 'Barney's Team' led by Liveryman Rod Adlington was joined by an impressive number of runners, which also included our own Liveryman Gerald Shortland. The fundraising event was in aid of Meninigitis Now, one of WCB's Charity Partner . An amazing achievement and it was clear the beer on offer at the celebratory drinks reception was much appreciated!

All in all, a wonderful lunch in the best traditions of the Livery and in the splendid surroundings of our Hall.
