The breadth of the meat industry was represented when 20 teams met on the first tee at the golf course at Essendon Country Club on 6 July competing in the first Meat Industry Invitational Golf Tournament organised by the Worshipful Company of Butchers, supported by Meat Management.
Playing 4 ball under Stapleford rules the standard of play was exceptional with 12 teams recording a score of 89 points or better.
Runners Up, FDQ, (pictured top right) the food specialist awarding body and end-point assessment organisation, returned an excellent 96 points.
The overall winners on the day though were Team Burtons Butchers, (pictured top left) a family run retail and catering business based in Saffron Walden. The team, captained by Assistant Andrew Burton, supported by son Tom, topped the leader board with an outstanding 98 points.
The sun shone, the fairways ran fast, the greens were true, the 19th hole facilities first class, and all agreed the event deserves its place in the golfing calendar.
The Master, Andrew Parker, in thanking the teams, sponsors and donors of prizes and auction items, paid tribute to the spirit and camaraderie of the meat industry.
Special thanks to Liveryman Alan Bird for his unstinting efforts in making the day a great success.
Feedback from all players was so positive that work is already under way on planning next year’s event, which will be played at the same venue, Essendon Country Club, AL9 6HN on Thursday 11 July 2024.
