It would seem that Liveryman Gerald Shortland has most definitely caught the running bug.
In recent times, Gerald has become a regular participant in Teach First's annual Run the River fundraiser and dared to run his first long distance Bath Half Marathon in March 2019. So, when he received an invitation from our Charity Partner, Teach First, to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon this year, he simply couldn't resist!
As with all other large-scale events at this current time, the fundraiser was converted to a virtual run. Always committed to his cause, Gerald was undeterred and said:
"I felt that the problems faced by the most disadvantaged pupils at the moment are so great I had better raise some money for them."
On the 11th April, Gerald ran his virtual half marathon with his daughter, Alice. They chose to run at Bewl Water, a local reservoir, following a carefully planned route to ensure that they achieved the 13.1 miles that was required to complete the 'virtual' course. Snow was forecast, but thankfully the day remained blizzard free!
After a while, Gerald realised that this challenge was a lot harder than he expected. It turned out that Alice's pace setting meant that he was 20 minutes quicker round the course than expected.
Needless to say Alice became a speck in the distance and was enjoying her well earned refreshment by the time he finished. With his grandchildren proudly holding up the finish line banner, he was offered a warm mug of hot chocolate, Gerald declined and chose to enjoy some much needed water!
Congratulations on your fantastic achievement Gerald and Alice!
