Teach First’s aim is that no child’s educational success is limited by their background. Something we at the Worshipful Company of Butchers feel passionately about.
WCB over the last few years has engaged with Teach First in many areas and thanks to the involvement of a broad cross section of the Livery can feel extremely proud of the contribution that has been made, whether it has been:
- through opening their businesses for a group of pupils so that they can experience a workplace
- providing work experience
- giving guest teacher lessons
- or Running the River.

Coaching a Teacher
It is impossible to overstate the value and benefit that can be provided by our Livery through members acting as a Coach to teachers working in some of the most challenging schools providing education for some of the most disadvantaged pupils of our society.
Over the last six years various Liverymen have performed this vital role and, in addition to finding the experience extremely rewarding, they have learned new skills through the training provided by Teach First, which in turn has been of great benefit in their business lives.
By providing unbiased advice we can enable teachers to overcome their challenges. All the training and support needed to impact a teacher’s career is provided by Teach First. You can download a flyer with further information here. Please do get in touch if you have any questions.
School Governor
Becoming a school governor is a challenging but hugely rewarding role. It provides the opportunity to make a real difference to young people.
Governors are responsible for overseeing the management of the school: the strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They enable the school to run as effectively as possible and ensure that pupils are getting a fantastic education.
Teach First offers an online module to support anyone who might be interested in becoming a governor and is happy to open this opportunity to any member of the Butchers' Company. The link to the module is here, but members of the Company would first need to register for an account on edX here.
