Joy at the Younger Generation Lunch

Published on: 9 August 2022

On Friday 2nd August we held a Luncheon at Butchers Hall with a difference. It was called the Younger Generation Lunch, however in reality it crossed the generations.

It was fabulous to see several families of three generations enjoying some special time together in our Hall. We were also delighted to welcome Liverymen without family members.

As our numbers were less than a typical Court Lunch, we were able to indulge in a drink’s reception on the roof terrace. It was a glorious Summer's day so we made the most of it before being called to lunch, which was served in The Great Hall. The Beadle had assistance from Beth Richardson when it was time to gavel, and she certainly made her mark.

Whilst we did not have a speaker, we did adhere to the formalities of Grace and the Loyal toasts. It was explained to the younger participants why this was important, and they were very respectful. However, at the age of three, it was just too tempting for Evie Cracknell to kick off her shoes and run around the Great Hall whilst her Grandma, Mum and Dad were enjoying a glass of port. Clearly enjoying the freedom, it was a joy to see.

The Clerk announced that the 200 club prize draw would take place during the Stirrup cup on the Ground Floor, the curious children asked the inevitable questions; "What is the Stirrup Cup?", "Why is it called that?", "Who is the Beadle?" and "Why is he called that?" The Clerk of course had all the answers, so if you ever want to know the answers, ask him!

The Clerk was ably assisted by Evie in drawing the lottery winners, although she declined putting her shoes back on, this did not deter from her willingness as a helper.

It was a great experience for Isabella who was a little shy and nervous at the beginning the day, however by the end was practising walking “like the Queen" down the sweeping steps to the ground floor

After a wonderful lunch of Roast Beef, those of us who could adjourned to the Hand and Shears to raise a glass. All agreed that the Younger Generation had certainly enjoyed the opportunity so see where their parents and grandparents go to enjoy the fellowship of being a Liveryman.

For next year, we encourage all of you to try this lunch - with your children, grandchildren or neither!
